Sound pressure level calculator

Cinema standard levels require 105 dB SPL at the main listening position for main channels and 115 dB SPL for the LFE channel. While this might be too loud for some, this calculator is able to show you how much absolute volume you can expect from your system, and plan purchases accordingly.

Basic data

These values are needed for the calculation.

Amplifier is rated for
Watts at
Ω

If there are multiple ratings available, choose the one closest to the impedance of your speakers.

Speakers are rated for
Watts at
Ω
Speaker sensitivity:
dB / W
Distance from speakers:
m

Some vendors inflate actual sensitivity by rating speakers of lower impedance at 8 Ohms. Signs that you should check this box:

  • The vendor calls the speaker "8 Ohm compatible". If this is the case, the true impedance is more than likely to be 4 Ω, and you should enter that value as the speaker impedance.
  • The vendor gives the sensitivity value in dB / 2.83 V instead of dB / W.
